The Ability to Use Adverb Degrees of Comparison in written Descriptive Text


Abstract 

Grammar is very essential and it makes the speakers of language understand sentences. It would be difficult for its speakers to communicate with each other, if people don’t have correct grammar. Especially adverb expressing degree of comparison is one of grammar focus which is taught in level of junior high school.
   Statement of the Problems in this study are; What are kind of adverb of degrees of comparison used in written descriptive text by the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Boja, What are the problems faced by the students and What are some possible solutions for the problems?
        The research design is qualitative approach. The writer chose 10 students’ writing descriptive texts of grade tenth of students of SMP Negeri 1 Boja from the one class as the population of research.  The object of this study is the adverb degrees of comparison used, the researcher doing observation to find out the problems faced by the students in making the descriptive texts using adverb degrees of comparison. The instruments of collecting the data in this research were observation and test guided.    
The result of the research is based on the analysis done, the writer can discuss the result that the most appeared adverb of degrees comparison used in descriptive text is using absolutely and definitely (adverb of frequency). Based on the analysis, the writer can discuss that the writing descriptive text which consists of many sentences belongs to the student number 9, he had thirteen sentences.  And the problems are : They cannot generalize the use of adverb and degree of comparison in the sentences. It can be seen from the analyzing and the table above. In this case, they need more practice using adverb and degree of comparison in writing text. And also they mostly wrote about the thing and place, when teacher asked them to make descriptive writing, then automatically they referred to things or place. It was because it was easy to be elaborated. Then the solution  are: Teacher can give them other understanding about the teaching adverb degree of comparison. Teacher may have the other sources of learning from other books. Students can be given tasks in building their understanding about adverb degree of comparison. They must have more practicing in formulating the adverb degree of comparison into sentences of paragraph.          
            And also the writer has the following suggestions related to this research: The writer expects that English teachers, students, readers, and writer can get some benefit from this research in which they can apply it well.
