AN ANALYSIS OF THE ELEMENTS AND MORAL VALUES OF THE NOVEL “THE SECRET GARDEN” BY FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT

Abstract

This study discuss about the elements and moral values of the novel “The Secret Garden”. The writer has some reasons in analysing this novel. First reading novel is very enjoyable and interesting, besides that we can get knowledge about human being characteristics and human being problems. Second reading English literature is very important to enrich our knowledge about custom and culture of the other countries.
    
The object of the study is the elements of the novel and the moral values in the novel “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The elements of the novel are character, plot, setting, point of view, theme, tone, atmosphere/mood, and style. The good moral values are hard working, kindness, never give up, warmth and friendship, loyalties. And the bad moral values such as tantrum, irresponsibility, tyrant, unpleasantness and unkindness.
In writing this study, the writer conducted a library research. She studied some references in relation with the topic. Her study was related to many books, theory of literature, dictionaries and encyclopaedias to support her ideas and opinions.
As a literary work, “The Secret Garden” is a good and interesting novel for children and adult. This novel tells the story about the children who do not get attention from their parents and they get happiness in the secret garden. The main characters in this novel are Mary Lennox, Colin Craven and Dickon Sowerby. The author also creates the minor characters who support this story so that it can be a good novel. The setting of the place in this novel are in India and England. The most setting of the place is in the secret garden in Misselthwaite Manor. Point of view of the story is omniscient point of view. The author tells the story in the third person. The writer explains her analysis of the style into syntax, diction and imagery. The most attractive is about the Yorkshire dialect. It can give us knowledge about the other language.
“The Secret Garden” is a good novel. The writer suggests that it is used as one of the selected novels for the readers who want get a good novel about how to teach our children to be good children.
