Abstract
The objectives of the study are: 1) To find out the usage of Smart Cards in teaching vocabulary for the fourth year students
of SD Negeri Wonorejo 01 Demak 2) To
find out what difficulties are encountered by the teacher in using the Smart Cards. 3) To find out the ways teacher can avoid the difficulties?
This is a descriptive qualitative research as the aim of
the study was to describe teaching vocabulary by using Smart Cards for
elementary school students. In conducting
this descriptive research, the writer chose the fourth year students of SD
Negeri Wonorejo 01 Demak as the population of the research. The class consisted
of 40 students. In this research there was 1 variable, namely using “Smart Cards” in teaching vocabulary for
fourth year students of SD Negeri Wonorejo 01 Demak. Several techniques were collected. The writer used one of
the following techniques: interview, observation or the combination technique.
The writer assessed some steps in organizing the observation, as follows:
1. Defining the steps of doing
observation. 2. Analyzing the teacher and the students’ activities in English
teaching vocabulary. 3. Analyzing the teacher problems emerging in teaching
vocabulary. 4. Analyzing the method of teaching vocabulary. 5. Analyzing the
advantage of the method to the students.
In Implementing
on teaching vocabulary using ‘Smart
Cards’ based on KTSP, the teacher was free to
look for the material that matches with characteristics of the students as long
as it supports the standard competency given by the National Education
Department. SD Negeri Wonorejo 01 Demak has applied teaching vocabulary based
on KTSP Competency Based Curriculum by putting or having the syllabus
appropriate to the curriculum and students’ need. The teaching vocabulary
syllabus was complete. It contained unit, topic, language function, expressions, and activity.
The problems faced by
the teacher in implementing on teaching vocabulary using Smart Cards are: The English teacher did not graduate from English
educational background. He does not know how
to explore his experiences in teaching English. He does not master many
vocabularies does not have a certain media to teach vocabulary. He does not know
about the syllabus in teaching vocabulary. He does not find the resources for
teaching vocabulary. He thinks that vocabulary is important for students, but
he focuses on the structure in teaching. He even doesn’t master all the
vocabularies in the Smart Cards. He sometimes comes lates and finishes the
lesson earlier.
Teacher’s ways to solve
their problems are; he should graduate
from English educational background. He can find the resources for teaching
vocabulary by browsing in the internet or hunting some related books from
bookstores. And the school should facilitate students with the media such as
Smart Cards.
Based on the result of
the study, the writer would like to offer some suggestions related to the
implementation of the teaching vocabulary using SMART CARDS especially for fourth
grade students of SD Negeri Wonorejo 01 Demak. 1) To English teachers: the
teachers have to teach vocabulary using media. One of the appropriate media is
SMART CARDS. 2) To students: the
students better have the media SMART CARDS in order to study independently
themselves. 3) To readers: Teaching vocabulary using SMART CARDS based on KTSP
Curriculum is one of the applications in implementing the new approach. That
can be applied by other English elementary teacher. 4) To writer: Teaching
vocabulary using SMART CARDS based on KTSP Curriculum can be one of resources
and experiences for him in order to teach English better.
